New Chevrolet Colorado High Country 2.5 L 4WD
We don’t call them commercial vehicles – we call them pickup trucks and “Chevy” is one of the legendary pickups. The Colorado model was born in the USA. “Drove my Chevy to the levy…” Now built in Thailand at the General Motors Rayong plant which opened in 2010. Here the latest edition with a name that rocks: Chevy Colorado High Country. Pattaya Today Automotive took it for a weekend test drive.

The Colorado High Country was easy to find. Parked at level 10A GM Thailand headquarters. Thanks to the paint job. “Pull Me Over Red” so beastly red that it almost hurts. I love it! Styling cues: The all-new dual-port grille, new bumper, new engine hood and the cool LED daytime running lamps. Maybe the best looking one-tonne Thai built pickup. You can hear it saying “I am ready to roll!”

The cabin is more like an upscale saloon car boasting black leather with white contrast stitching, power-adjustable driver’s seat and piano black accents. Colorado is the first truck in the Thai market to offer Apple Car Play. In the center console a new driver information center with 8-inch color touch screen and Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system the chunky climate control buttons and the air vents are well positioned. All controls user friendly, also when driving in the night. High Country is a four-door crew-cab design with ample legroom in the backseat including armrest. This truck also boasts a marked reduction in wind noise, vibration and harshness. “NVH”.

The powerful and fuel efficient four-cylinder turbo-diesel is available in manual and automatic transmission producing 180 horsepower and 440 Nm or torque. The 6-speed automatic box with manual mode provides smooth shifting. Diesel fuel consumption during our test drive according the on-board computer average 9.0 and best 17.4 km/l.

You can start the Colorado High Country engine with the remote-start function on the key fob. Chevy High Country shares this feature with the new Honda Civic. The range is 100 meter. Just click and the engine starts and the LED’s light up. Cool feature – especially when you park your Colorado outside TESCO-LOTUS in the high noon heat.

Safety: Everything from Panic Brake Assist (PBA), to Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Hill Start Assist (HSA). Plus front airbags for driver and passenger and knee airbag for the chauffeur. Important Driver Assistance features: Depending on variants, the all-new Colorado boasts lane departure warning, forward collision alert, front and rear parking assist and tire pressure monitor. Additionally, it features auto rain sensor, auto headlamp on/off and the remote-start function. It also comes with a wide-angle view reverse camera (back up camera).

The Drive: Destination Kaeng Krachang National Park. Don’t be scared by the tongue-twisting “Kaeng Kra-chang” name. Most south bound week-enders pass the road sign at Khao Yoi it without blinking on their way to Hua-Hin, Prachaup Khirikhan. Kaeng Krachang town is only 180 km from Bangkok. Hit the Thai national highway route 4 (Southern bound highway) and drive until junction to route 3499 south of Phetchaburi.

FGD_3742-app-copyContinue 32 km and you’ll you reach Kaeng Krachan Town, near the national park HQ and the reservoir of Kaeng Krachang dam, which looks like natural lake surrounded by rolling hills. The park consists mainly of evergreen rainforest with the highest elevation at 1,200m. In the area you’ll find hot springs, waterfalls and caves. Accommodation? Camping grounds, guest houses including a boutique resort the Nana Resort & Spa. What to Do? Trekking, birdwatching, butterfly watching, caving, rafting, canoeing – or just relaxing listening to the birds and the wind.

The Chevy Colorado High Country passed test with flying colors: the expressway, highway, country road elevated hill climbs and descents on the asphalt track and the dusty dirt roads. Riding high on the 18 inch tires with commanding view and 180 horsepower provided plenty of traction. On the downhill hairpin turns adequate brakes. Feeling safe in a tough yet refined Chevy truck. Oh, yes!
